We aren’t born with good character, we are born with a selfish human nature. We don’t have to teach children to lie, we have to teach them to tell the truth. Our consciences and character are developed by teaching and discipline from others and our circumstances.
“For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.” James 1:3-4 NLT
The same is true for our faith. We have mustard seed faith to surrender to Jesus and be saved and then the Holy Spirit helps it grow…if we let it. We can stunt our spiritual growth, though. And many Christians do because they are afraid of the trials and the challenges they might encounter. Jesus didn’t sugar-coat this when He said, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me.” Matthew 16:24
But we don’t go through any of it alone - He is with us, helping us and teaching us every step of the way… and it’s worth it!
